Before we know it, winter will be upon us, and suddenly freezing cold nights will appear out of nowhere here in Dallas/Fort Worth, North Texas. Protecting your pipes ahead of time, while the temperatures are still mild and comfortable, and home supply store’s stock is still available, is the best way to prevent high costs of repairs later. Here is how!
Keep your Home Warmer during Freezes
This is a small price to pay to protect your pipes than an expensive repair bill later. North Texas doesn’t stay below freezing for too long either, so the cost of this really isn’t very financially painful.
Pipe Insulation
While this isn’t the perfect solution to exposed pipe freeze protection, any attempt to protect them is worth the cost, and it really does help. Home repair companies have these and they are very easy to install.
When Out of Town, Turn your Water Off!
This is a great way to prevent unexpected frozen pipes, without having any way to try to prevent the issue if a sudden freeze descends upon us and you are gone. Only the pipes that have water sitting in them are at risk of freezing and bursting. You could beg a good neighbor, if you find someone willing to go out of their way to help, but good luck with that! By simply shutting off your water at the source, you save yourself from this emergency, let alone the risk of coming home to burst pipes spewing all over your floors unattended.
Heating Cables
A heat cable installed along or around exposed pipes is another way to protect yourself. These are sold at most electrical supply companies. And if you need help, our plumbers can help, just let us know!
Seal all Air Leaks around your Home
Another good way to prevent your pipes from freezing, (and maximize your energy efficiency) is by sealing all open and airy areas of your home. If cold air cannot get in, chances are frozen piping cannot happen. Typical air leaks are around dryer vents and bathroom sink pipes as well as areas that have electrical wiring. Seal them with insulating foam or other material, or caulk to prevent the cold air from coming in.
Garages
Most people forget about their garage until it’s too late, and they have a pipe break. If your garage is attached, the easiest way to keep it warm is by opening the door from the inside of your home to your garage during hard freezes. Space heaters are a great way to solve this problem as well, and most all home supply stores sell these.
